Corner Alliance Supports Financial Responsibility Program
for Local Youth

March 19, 2013

Alexandria, VA--Corner Alliance, Inc. is proud to serve as a corporate sponsor for the TeamesteemTM is the Key to a Teen’s Financial Dreams Community Campaign.  The campaign works with local communities to educate at-risk teens about financial literacy in practical, relevant ways.  Corner Alliance recently participated in an informational event with youth from the D.C. Metro Area to promote the related book, TeamesteemTM is the Key to a Teen’s Financial Dreams.

Authored by local teacher Daryl Mackey, this book encourages teens to build positive relationships and set realistic goals in order to thrive personally and financially. The book dives into five pillars of success—motivation, goal setting, academics, decision making, and peer groups—and provides teens with a systematic approach to redefine their future. Through simple workbook exercises and a strong action plan, the book empowers students to create and work towards individualized personal, social, school, career, and financial goals.

In February and March, Corner Alliance and TeamesteemTM distributed free copies of the book to 25 local teenagers. Corner Alliance co-founder Ron Prater remarks, “What I like about TeamesteemTM is that it fits Corner Alliance's model of helping people and organizations ‘thrive.’  Teamesteem’sTM team-based approach enables individuals to achieve their goals, become financially proficient, and truly thrive.”

About TeamesteemTM Daryl Mackey developed the term Teamesteem™ while researching his Master’s thesis, “The Missing Ingredients in a Good High School Coaching Philosophy.” The Teamesteem™ concept was created to describe teamwork in its ideal form—a group of people working collectively to achieve a vision while advancing their individual skills. What began as a thesis project blossomed into a program to help young adults succeed—personally, academically, and financially.  The book was created with a special emphasis for young students and adults, but ultimately for anyone desiring more knowledge on the importance of financial literacy. Mr. Mackey uses his motivational approaches to encourage students, athletes, and others to utilize networking techniques and team-building strategies in their quest for financial goals and freedom. Teen Financial Summit Encourages Local Youth
October 28, 2012

What happens when teenagers and money mix? The result depends upon a number of factors that will be discussed at the Fall 2012 Teen Financial Summit at the Carlyle Club in Alexandria, Virginia on November 3 from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. “The event will also recognize Student Ambassadors, local students who embody the spirit of our foundational tenets,” said Daryl Mackey, CEO of TeamEsteem and author of “Teamesteem is the Key to a Teen’s Financial Dream.”

The 2012 Ambassadors include Oduro Agyei-Boateng, Brianna Boyd, Aynia Dorsey, Lauren Servais, Mary Tran and Tamaric Wilson.

Mackey says he hopes to identify the needs of teenagers, in order to develop future programs that promote the keys to life-long success.

“The important factor for putting together the book and working with the project is getting teenagers to create positive habits that are safe and teaching them how to find money that’s available for education and certification,” Mackey said. “We want to inspire teens and encourage them to make good decisions.” Mackey said the key is to expose them to people in a positive setting.

“I think they don’t understand the importance of financial responsibility,” said David Aramony, a student at the University of Virginia who works with Teamesteem. “I think it’s something you don’t realize until it’s too late, especially with how expensive a college education is. You’re graduating with $100,000 in debt. So, it’s important to get that financial responsibility ingrained early on,” he said.

Many of the students are economically-challenged, according to Mackey. He gives teenagers the following tips:

1) Don’t spend more than you make

2) Save

3) Invest in yourself

Corner Alliance sponsors book distribution that teaches teens about teamwork and financial responsibility

Washington, D.C. – Corner Alliance Inc. is pleased to announce its sponsorship of Teamesteem is the Key to a Teen’s Financial Dreams, an easy-to-read book empowering high school students to take control of their financial future. Corner Alliance joined the Teamesteem Network by purchasing copies of the book on behalf of ten students participating in the Teamesteem program.

Created by West Potomac High School teacher and Alexandria, Va. native Daryl Mackey, Teamesteem is a word meant to describe teamwork in its ideal form—a group of people working collectively to achieve a vision while advancing their individual skills. What began as a word to encapsulate Mackey’s coaching philosophy on the basketball court blossomed into a program to help young adults succeed—personally, academically and, now with the authorship of Teamesteem is the Key to a Teen’s Financial Dreams, financially as well.

The book uses plain language to teach goal setting, money management and personal motivation techniques to get teens on the path toward financial success early.

“The strength of this book is that it’s written in common terms and with a structure that makes it easy to implement,” said Corner Alliance co-founder Ron Prater. “Young adults face a lot of challenges today—how they handle these challenges now will shape their opportunities for success later. Teamesteem aligns with Corner Alliance’s values of speaking plainly and creatively uniting communities. We are thrilled to lend support to Mr. Mackey’s vision of educating, empowering, and exciting young people around financial literacy.”
